My pup Peanut, mirroring how I feel about the future at times.

What gives you the most anxiety? For me, it’s the future.

I had always assumed I’d get married someday, and we’d grow old together and be there to take care of each other when our minds and bodies started failing us (haven’t you seen The Notebook??). After I turned 30, I realized marriage may not be in the cards for me and I should probably start planning for that scenario.

For example, last year I increased my retirement contribution and met with an adviser who confirmed, to my relief, that I’m on track to retire by age 65.

This year I’m more focused on my physical fitness. Here’s why:

I took a yoga class with my friend’s mom a while back, and it was eye-opening to say the least. I was blown away by her athleticism. Her movements were fluid and effortless. Her plank and warrior II were rock solid. It looked like she could stay there all day, while I struggled not to visibly shake.

I should also mention that she’s in her 70s! I didn’t know it was even possible to be in such great shape in that season of life until then. She’s made a point of living an active, healthy lifestyle, and it’s paying off.

It made me realize that the choices I make now will affect the quality of life I’ll have down the line.

This year I want to address my fear of being unable to take care of myself and focus on what I can do in order to live a long, healthy life.
